About UHM Historic Costume Collection: Established in the Summer of 1960
“The articles
acquired by Oma Umbel during her sabbatical leave provided the nucleus for Asian
Costume Collection at the University
of Hawaii . Over the
years, students and friends of the University learned of the collection, and
generous donations of artifacts came from the closets of Hawaii and mainland”
(Carol Anne Dickson, 1989) and countries of Asia.
Mission
Preserve ethnographic costume artifacts, and Sub-Asian collection contains between 4,000 to 8,000
Asian textile and costume artifacts.
The mission of the Costume Museum at UHM is to support teaching in the Department of Fashion Design & Merchandising as well as other departments at the University of Hawaii; promote research by students, faculty, and visiting scholars; and provide artifacts for use in class and exhibition in the Textile Gallery, Display and other museums.
Background
Departmental faculty established the Collection in 1960 to preserve historic and ethnographic textiles, clothing, accessories, home-furnishing fabrics, and related materials and equipment that they used in their classes. Research involving objects from the Collection has increased significantly. Exhibitions in the Miller Hall Textile Gallery enhance the visibility of the Collection and offer a venue for educating the University Community.

Description
The Collection consists of approximately 18,00 garments, textiles, and related artifacts. The collection is housed in the Fashion Design and Merchandising program in the Family and Consumer Science Department and the University of Hawai'i, in Miller Hall. The items in the Collection have been donated for nearly 60 years.
The items in the collection are not replicas but authentic artifacts from as far back as 1850. There are 4 sub-collections: Western, Asian, Hawaiian, and Ethnic.
